Part 27 – Left or Right? – You Choose

Blessings and virtues mentioned in Surah Rahman

Eloquent speech, Sun and the moon, herbs and trees prostrate to Allah, earth for the creatures, fruits, date palms, corn, sweet-scented plants, Sunrise and Sunset, oceans – salt and fresh, pearls and corals, ships on the sea, Jannah!Two springs flowing free, every kind of fruit in pairs, couches of silk, fruits of the two gardens, chaste females, two springs gushing forth, pomegranates, green cushions and matresses

Then which of your Lords Blessings will you deny? Blessed is the Name of your Lord, The Owner of Majesty and Honour!

These are just a few of the innumerable examples of blessings Allah has poured down for us and preserved for us in the Hereafter. As Allah repeats in almost every alternate verse – “Which of your Lords blessings will you deny?” we must see that it is as though Allah is trying to wake us up to count our blessings and be grateful to Him by repeating it so much.

Surah al-Waqiya (The Event)

Surah al- Waqiya refers to The Event – meaning the Day of Judgement and in it Allah is very descriptive of that Day and the destinations of two groups of people – the people of the left hand and the people of the right hand. This refers to which hand these people will receive their Book of Deeds in. If we are good, and worship Allah as He is pleased, and He forgives us and has Mercy upon us we will receive our Books in our right hand. If Allah is displeased, then we will receive them in the left, behind our backs. May Allah make us among the people of the right hands and grant us companionship from among them.

The People of the right hand

“So those on the Right Hand – how fortunate will be those on the Right Hand!” (56:08)

1- They will be on thrones woven with gold and precious stones (56:15)

2- Reclining on those thrones face to face (56:16) – With time to spare with each other, no where to rush to ,no where to dash to, no work to see to. Just time to relax and have fun.

3- Served with cups and jugs with flowing wine and any fruit they choose and meats they desire (56:17-21).

4- Hur – Fair, lovely, females with wide lovely eyes like preserved pearls (65:22-23) – Women of this world will be more beautiful than them and will have no jealousy in their hearts.

5- No sinful speech, like backbiting, swearing etc – just the saying “Salam! Salam!” – Peace. (56:25-26)

6- Amazing trees like lote, bananas with long shade and fruits in plenty that never run out of season. All standing by flowing water. Enjoyed on couches and thrones. (56:28-34)

As we read these verses we must long to be among this group of people. We are either among them, or we are among the other group – we seek refuge in Allah. Its 50/50 we are either in one group or the other. Let us take time to read about the people of the left hand;

The people of the left hand

“And those on the Left Hand – how unfortunate will be those on the Left Hand!” (56:41)

1- In fierce hot wind and boiling water and shadow of black smoke, neither cool nor pleasant. (56:42-44) All those things we seek out to try and cool down will only worsen the punishment.

2- The people of the left hand persisted in sin and used to deny the Day of Resurrection

3- Their food will be the tree of Zaqqum, filling their bellies with it and drinking down boiling water like a thirsty camel (56:52-56)

When we read these verses we must be afraid to fall into this category. There are only two groups. Now we must ask ourselves – which group are we striving to be in? Listen to another comparison Allah offers in this Juz- It is so descriptive that it will shake your heart;

“On the Day you shall see the believing men and the believing women – their light running forward before them in their right hands (their books shining like a beam of light to show the way) Glad tidings for you this Day! Gardens under which rivers flow, to dwell therein forever! Truly, this is the great success!” (57:12)

Compare this with the people of the Left Hand

“On the Day when the hypocrites – men and women – will say to the believers: “Wait for us! Let us get something from your light!” So a wall  will be put up between them, with a gate therein, Inside it will be mercy, and outside it will be torment. The hypocrites will call the believers: “Were we not with you?” The believers will reply: “Yes! But you led yourselves into temptations, you looked forward for our destruction, you doubted in faith and you were deceived by false desires, til the command of Allah came to pass, And the chief deceiver (shaytan) deceived you in respect of Allah.” (57:13-14)

We are soon coming to the last Juz of the Qur’an. The pages are becoming thinner as we reach the other side of The Book. We are taking a Journey and we have reflected upon many lessons. There are many more we have not discussed and as the Journey through life continues we must keep returning to the Qur’an to guide us and keep us on The Path. Let us take a look at another heart-rendering Verse that Allah presents to us as we are reaching the final pages of The Book of Allah. Allah has something to say to us, lets hear;

“Has not the time come for the hearts of those who believe to be affected by Allah’s Reminder, and that which has been revealed of the truth, in case they become as those who received the Scripture before and the term was prolonged for them and so their hearts were hardened” ( 57:16)

As we journey through the Qur’an we must not just read the verses but we must ponder upon them in order to affect our hearts. We must allow the Words of Allah to be a beacon of light that gives our minds clarity, changing the way we think and behave. Has not the time come? It is not too late to absorb ourselves in the Words of Allah and always keep returning back to The Qur’an for guidance and anchors to keep us on The Straight Path.
